All Good in the Hood

Hey y'all! IT'S FALL!

Fall is a beautiful season, especially in Tennessee. In Texas, fall didn't really exist. But on the chilly mountaintop where I currently reside, fall is very real. Leaves actually change colors here, and I'm already pulling out my knits from storage. I saw my breath today for the first time since last winter, which made me feel a twinge of excitement, but also a wee bit of dread, for I know just how dang cold it gets here on the Domain.

Feeling comfy and cozy in the brisk fall weather is a must. Some of my favorite fall pieces are a great pair of jeans, a hooded, soft sweater, moccasins, and deep dark lipstick to edge up the look.

Photoshop Tips: Airbrushing

While I'm no expert at Photoshop, I have made myself practice several different skills such as dodging and burning, liquifying, blurring backgrounds, and most importantly, airbrushing. In almost every professional photograph it is extremely rare for the subject to not be completely airbrushed, especially in magazines. I don't always agree with the extent of work put in to make someone look absolutely flawless in every ad or spread, but I decided to try it out for myself. Don't get me wrong, I think every one of my models/subjects are beautiful, but I wanted to try out a Photoshop technique that professional photographers use for smoothing skin and making the overall photograph look perfect.

Following this step-by-step video helped me TREMENDOUSLY!
Without it, I wouldn't have known what to do!

Let's Talk About Portraits!

Let's get one thing straight, I am not the type of person who loves to take pictures of sunsets, or close-ups of flowers or anything like that. I love to take pictures of people. I love to pick scenarios, clothes, color schemes, and special places to take the photographs. Making a fantastical scene for the viewer of the photograph to get lost in is what I strive for.
In order to practice photographing people, I like to take simple shots, almost like school pictures, of my friends. These help in developing lighting techniques and focus settings on my camera, and it's just overall fun!
So, if you are interested in fashion photography, or just photographing people in general, grab some friends and practice with them.

This is a simple shot of my friend, Ashley. In this photo, I experimented with lighting, and sun shadows coming through the trees. Her white shirt makes the photograph very light and sunny. I also like how the  background is blurred, while she is in focus.

In this photo, I experimented with the "rule of thirds". Imagine the photograph was split into three vertical quadrants, like this grid:

The rule says that the main focus of the photograph should be contained into one quadrant. I chose the far right quadrant for the subject of this photo. The fountain and the wind blowing her hair back gives motion to the picture.
